Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Here are some frequently asked questions about our services and response times.
Grounded Boots Relief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Western North Carolina focused on disaster response and recovery. We provide reconnaissance, communication, and logistical support to help communities and emergency managers make informed decisions in the immediate aftermath of disasters.
Our Crisis Response Team deploys shortly after a disaster to assess damage, identify hazards, and report real-time conditions to local emergency managers and partner organizations. We focus on observation and communication, ensuring accurate information guides aid efforts.
Our Long-Term Recovery Team serves communities throughout Western North Carolina, assisting with debris clearing, donation management, and ongoing community support. We work side by side with local partners, faith-based groups, and recovery organizations to help families regain stability long after the initial crisis has passed. These efforts represent our ongoing commitment to the region we call home, ensuring that recovery continues even after the cameras are gone and attention has shifted elsewhere.
While we remain focused on long-term recovery within Western North Carolina, this work is not part of our active scope in other states or regions at this time. However, we may be able to assist outside areas by helping establish long-term recovery partnerships, connecting organizations, or advising on resource development. In this way, we contribute to the larger recovery network, strengthening readiness and collaboration beyond our immediate reach.
No. While many of our volunteers are veterans and bring valuable experience from their service, Grounded Boots Relief is not a veteran-run or military organization. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds who share our commitment to readiness, service, and community.
No. Grounded Boots Relief is not a faith-based organization. We are a nonreligious nonprofit that welcomes volunteers, partners, and supporters from all backgrounds and beliefs. While we often collaborate with churches and faith-based groups during disaster response, our mission is rooted in service, compassion, and community rather than any specific religious affiliation.
We welcome partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations that align with our mission. Sponsors help fund readiness, equipment, and logistics, and we provide authentic visibility and engagement in return. Those interested in annual sponsorships can reach us at [email protected].

Grounded Boots Relief serves communities within roughly a 500-mile radius of Western North Carolina, including over 400 counties.
We were founded following Hurricane Helene in 2024. Our volunteers jumped into action, cutting trees, delivering propane, and providing assessments for emergency officials. That first response showed us where we were most effective, and we’ve since refined our mission to focus on post-disaster assessments and communication.
You can fill out our online volunteer application to join either the Crisis Response Team or the Western North Carolina Long-Term Recovery Team. We also have ongoing volunteer needs in social media, accounting, grant writing, logistics, and coordination. Some roles allow for remote volunteering.

The phrase “boots on the ground” refers to the people in the field who directly affect the outcome of a response. It was spoken by our founder just a few days into the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and ultimately became our name, Grounded Boots Relief.
